Biography

Hello and welcome! I'm Robert Heath, and I have a passion for music and a drive to build a more compassionate world through cross-cultural exchange. During my time with the West Virginia Army National Guard's 249th Army Band (Morgantown, WV) and the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet Band (Yokosuka, Japan), I have seen music inspire patriotism in West Virginia and build bridges across cultural gaps in Southeast Asia and Australia. Indeed, music is a powerfully connective medium. My experience abroad, coupled with my academic background, leads me to believe music and the arts have a substantial role to play in cross-cultural relationships in the political and business sectors of Asia and the rest of the world in the 21st century.
Further, musicians and artists need to earn living wages in order to most effectively do their work. By utilizing smaller, more versatile groups, I am working to create more cost-effective, mobile, and sustainable musical organizations.
Because culture is best experienced live, I also regularly perform clarinet recitals and conduct chamber ensembles, actively collaborating with other musicians and social innovators.
Recently finished with a graduate degree in international affairs at the University of California in San Diego, I am integrating the arts within a multidisciplinary policy environment. Before my time with the U.S. Navy, I completed undergraduate degrees in both political science and music performance (clarinet) at Marshall University.
Influential teachers have included Dr. Ann Marie Bingham, Dr. Marybeth Beller, Dr. Jamie Warner, Dr. George Davis, Cathy Ogram, Katie Genovese, Dr. John Hixson, Timothy Carter, Dana Zimbric, and Dr. Ulrike Schaede.
