Current Projects
Resonance Horizon
2017-present
After completing our respective degrees at UCSD in June 2017, David Dong and I founded Resonance Horizon, a full symphonic orchestra that exclusively performs anime, video game, and movie music and combines those performances with cutting edge visual technology. We want to take the orchestral experience into the 21st century horizon! For this ensemble, I am the music director and chief of operations. For more information, please check out www.resonancehorizon.com.
Project: 音 Sound 음
(2016-present)
Upon concluding my service with the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet Band, I wanted to bring my cross cultural collaboration experiences back with me to West Virginia. The result is Project: 音 Sound 음.
The cultural ambassadors of Project: 音Sound음 strive to shatter cultural barriers by performing fresh, culturally relevant music for rural audiences in Asia and the United States. These elite musicians take having fun seriously, infecting audiences with their celebration of different cultures. For its inaugural tour, the group premiered 8 new works at 3 concerts in southern West Virginia and Ohio. For more information, visit www.meetprojectsound.com or www.sonic-impact.com. |
Previous Projects
the podcast fellowship with seth godin and alexandra dipalma (July-august 2018)
I worked with a lot of fantastic people who helped me create a podcast that could add something meaningful to the world. Over the course of about two months, I produced work that was critiqued by my students, just as I critiqued their work. I have never worked in such a positive educational environment that was wholly without competition and ego. The first goal was to make something terrible, which was then submitted to my classmates for their input. Then, I refined it taking by using/ rejecting the of advice my peers. Then, I did it again until I had the first few episodes of my podcast Robert in Concert, coming Fall 2018 to your regular podcast platforms.
Master's of Advanced studies in International Affairs (2016-217)
I attended UC San Diego to study international political economy and a heavy dose of business management with a regional specialization in Japan. While there, I spent many of my projects exploring how culture, economics, and politics connect and affect each other. My studies further reinforced my opinion that culture (and the arts) is a vital third leg of society and must not be casually swept aside.
Project: Ongaku no Tomodachi (Friends in Music) (2014-2015)
While stationed with the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet Band in Yokosuka, Japan, a colleague and I founded Project: Ongaku no Tomodachi in order to provide joint performance opportunities for Japanese and American musicians. Over two years, the group performed two concerts. The first concert included traditional chamber music, while the second featured the premiere of 2 original works for a chamber wind ensemble.

Benefit Recitals
(2013-2014)
While stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, I performed one recital a year. The first one occurred at a pizza parlor on base (the only place with an available piano). For the two later recitals, I performed at the Yokosuka Arts Theater's Bayside Pocket Theater and donated all ticket proceeds to the local masonic lodge, which regularly worked with the local homeless population and orphanages. Each recital included a close collaboration with colleagues on various instruments (and even a soprano, seen in the photo). The superb Yoriko Oguri, a piano teacher in Tokyo, accompanied me.
