We all like to give our opinions on what we think is good and bad. Many times, we confuse our personal opinions with judgments in other contexts. For instance, when we say that Beethoven is the best composer ever, we do not necessarily mean he is the most historically significant, the most popular, or the most innovative. What we actually mean is “I really like his music!” Of course, a group can explicitly discuss the historical significance, etc. Only on the rarest of occasions should we speak on behalf of history or on behalf of a large group of people. History and the individuals of the group can speak for themselves.
